The team India with 16 members squad has been announced for Asia cup after the All-India Senior Selection Committee meeting happened on September 1st. The series will start from 15th September 2018 in U.A.E.
Virat Kohli is rested for the tournament and it’s Rohit Sharma, who will lead the team while Shikhar Dhawan has been named as vice-captain. It is the unanimous decision took by committee in consultation with Team India Management to rest the current team skipper Kohli.
We already witnessed Rohit’s captaincy in IPL editions. It is a good chance for selectors to see how Rohit lead the young team and be a back up captain for Kohli. Indeed it is interesting to say that “Team India Openers (Rohit and Dhawan) to lead the squad in Asia Cup”.
The Acting Hon. Secretary of BCCI, Amitabh Chowdary announced the team as listed below.
India’s Squad for Asia Cup 2018: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shikhar Dhawan (vice-captain), KL Rahul, Manish Pandey, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Khaleel Ahmed .
MSK Prasad, chairman of senior selection panel, said in press conference that he was there for third Test match with England and sat for a discussion with management team about workload. Kohli has been playing for long time since IPL without any significant break or rest. So, considering the workload they decided to preserve precious players who were playing all three formats (T20s, ODI, Test matches) and started with Kohli who will be rested for this Asia Cup.
The wait continues for Mayank Agarwal! When asked about Mayank Agarwal, MSK Prasad said “Yes, Mayank has been fantastic. He is performing consistently for last 10 to 12 months of time. He is just a step away and I’m sure he will get his recognition and he did well in all the given opportunities (List A and India A). We will definitely look at him when we rested other players with workload.”
Kuldeep Yadav had given a chance to play in remaining Test matches with England before playing in Asia Cup. He will be playing for two Tests matches with Australia A so that he is gearing for upcoming West Indies series as well.
The 20-year-old left arm pacer, Khaleel Ahmed called up for his maiden game. Khaleel from Rajasthan, played for Sunrisers Hyderabad Team in 2018 IPL edition. He played for only one game and went on wicket-less conceding 38 runs for 3 overs. However he is performing reasonably good in India A series. “We are already getting closer to World Cup and still two-three slots are not finalized. Among that, seamer’s slot is available and we are looking for left arm pacer option in Khaleel”, said MSK Prasd in press conference.
Manish Pandey, Jadhav, Bumrah are back to the squad to play in Asia Cup after injuries.
Ambati Rayudu who was failed in yo-yo fitness test, missed in squad for ODI series against England. He was called to play in Asia Cup. Now it is like a competition between Rayudu and Pandey to cement their position slot for World Cup especially at No. 4 slot. “We have only few games left to decide who is best in that slot. We have been trying different options and as part of that we gave opportunity to Manish and Rayudu” said MSK Prasad when asked if Suresh Raina out of contention.
India’s campaign in Asia Cup starts at Dubai from September 18th against the team that wins the Qualifiers. The next day, India plays their next match against rival Pakistan. India should finish on the top two from their Group to play in Super Four Stage that starts from September 21st and final match will be on September 28th.
